Otto Griebling

12" red clay with hand and airbrushed acrylic
I researched clowns for this piece and was intrigued with Otto's silent and
sad form of comedy. This is one of my favorite pieces
Otto Griebling (1896-1972) was one of the great circus clowns, a contemporary
of Emmet Kelly. He was German born, and came to this country at the age of 14.
Otto started his circus career in Baraboo, Wisconsin, with the Hodgini Riding
act where he was an excellent bareback comedy rider. He later worked for Sells-Floto
Circus where he toyed with his audience's emotions, sometimes being sassy, crazy
and quite eccentric. Routines for which he was famous included juggling metal
pie plates and a running gag in which he attempted to deliver a block of ice
throughout the show, with the ice becoming increasingly smaller with each repetition.
Variations included delivering a plant which would grow enormously between attempts.
Otto always performed a silent act. He was a featured performer with Ringling
Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus, and Cole Bros. In 1970 Ottos larynx was removed
and pantomime became a way of life both in and out of make-up. He remained an
active performer with Ringling Bros. until his death in 1972.
